Ice jam floods have not been recorded in Lithuania’s major rivers – the Nemunas and the Neris – for more than a decade. The last such event was documented in 2010, when an ice blockage in the Neris River near Kaunas caused a sudden rise in water levels and flooding of surrounding areas.

River cross-section measurements are crucial for modelling ice jam floods. During these highly detailed measurements, the geometry of river valleys, surface elevations, channel slopes, and water surface gradients are carefully examined.

Cold winters accompanied by significant precipitation can pose a significant threat in the spring due to floods, ice drifts and ice jams. The consequences of these natural disasters often include destroyed housing, damaged public facilities, and sometimes even human lives. The only solution to this problem is to analyze the situation in advance and predict area of river flooding as a result of ice jams.

On September 24-25, the ICEREG project ICE-JAM modelling training for project participants took place. The training was conducted by experts from the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

On September 17–19, 2024, the second ICEREG project expedition took place. LEI experts (Vytautas Akstinas, Serhii Nazarenko, Darius Jakimavičius, and Diana Šarauskienė) conducted cross-sectional and discharge measurements on the Mūša River. Data on valley surface elevations, riverbed geometry, flow velocity, and water surface slopes were collected at 25 cross-sections between Pantakonys and Ustukiai. Dense vegetation in the riverbed posed challenges, but clearer sections provided better measurement conditions. The collected data will support the calibration of the Mūša River hydrodynamic model and enhance understanding of ice jam floods.
