Innovative Solutions for Managing Flood and Ice Jam Risks

Cold winters accompanied by significant precipitation can pose a significant threat in the spring due to floods, ice drifts and ice jams. The consequences of these natural disasters often include destroyed housing, damaged public facilities, and sometimes even human lives. The only solution to this problem is to analyze the situation in advance and predict area of river flooding as a result of ice jams. For this purpose, the staff of the Hydrological Laboratory in the Lithuanian Energy Institute uses the most modern methods and equipment of research and data collection. The model of the river and its basin is created on the basis of lidar images of the land surface and refined during the expedition using industrial GPS, drones and echo sounders. The geospatial data is processed in GIS and then loaded into the HEC-RAS software to create a river and flood model, while the SYKE tool helps to calculate probable volume and accumulation of ice.

The Project is funded by the European Union’s Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027
