Project objective – To test the R&D idea and to prepare an application for the “European Horizon” programme call through an interdisciplinary project.

The HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-02-02 call will invite applications for research to develop innovative next-generation synthetic renewable fuel technologies. One of the main challenges in developing next-generation synthetic fuel technologies is selecting the right catalysts for the reaction, to reduce reaction temperatures and ensure high conversion efficiency. This project will address these challenges by testing Mg2Ni catalysts and investigating their potential for decomposing methane into hydrogen and solid carbon by methane pyrolysis, and additionally by using the catalyst as a hydrogen storage system (Mg2NiH4). Methane pyrolysis is a clean process that produces hydrogen from methane and can use the solid carbon as a valuable by-product in various industrial processes. Moreover, the use of biomethane (methane produced from garbage or plastic waste) transforms the process from CO2-neutral to CO2-negative (i.e. the CO2 is even consumed), which is strongly promoted in the context of climate neutrality.

Further processes could use hydrogen as a source for a new generation of synthetic renewable fuels. The project will include a field trip to a European Hydrogen Week event to communicate with potential project partners, including both academia and industry, to develop the project idea. The project will take into account the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals for Energy (SDG7), the Green Deal, RePowerEU and other EU initiatives, contributing to climate change mitigation, increasing overall process efficiency by avoiding the use of critical raw materials, and ensuring sustainability of the overall process.
