The objective of the project Testing an R&D idea – Saving energy and resources by combining the recycling of plant and animal bio-waste into useful products (No. 10-038-T-0162) is to prepare and application proposal for the Horizon Europe programme calls for proposals in the framework of an interdisciplinary project.

The project addresses the following issue:
One of the challenges currently facing the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Lithuania is the lack of capacity and incentives to prepare international R&D proposals, as outlined in Progress Measure 12-001-01-02-01 of the Science Development Programme. This project will address the aforementioned issue by conducting information gathering, preparatory research, and partner search activities to assist in the preparation of the application and obtain the necessary knowledge for the preparation of the application in the framework of the HORIZON-CL5-2024-D2-02-03 (New forms of cooperation in agriculture and the forest-based sector) of the European Horizon Programme, in the framework of a multidisciplinary project.
Under this call of the European Horizon Programme, we plan to submit a project on better interaction between farmers, foresters and manufacturers of machinery specialised in these sectors, through the use of thermo-engineering. The project’s objectives are in line with the HORIZON-JU-CBE-2024-CSA-01 call, where the results of HORIZON projects are expected to contribute to the achievement of the following outcomes:

  • Identification of new forms of cooperation among primary producers and other rural actors, and between them and bio-based industries, in circular bio-based businesses.
  • Increased potential of innovative cooperative and circular bio-based business models for primary producers and other rural actors in different regions and pedo-climatic zones in Europe.
  • Better awareness on the added-value bio-based products (including e.g. food ingredients or food supplements) and products with improved sustainability characteristics (e.g. resource efficiency, environmental impact, circularity, social sustainability, etc.) and their scaling up potential.
  • Creation of ‘green’, fair and skilled jobs and new and local business opportunities with potential for replication across the EU.
  • Identification of new forms of cooperation of primary producers and other rural actors in circular, biobased businesses.
  • Improved circularity and resource efficiency of bio-based value chains via practical application of circular bioeconomy, encompassing the resource- and energy-efficient, cascading use of sustainably sourced biomass.
  • Improved sustainability, strategic autonomy, resilience and competitiveness of the European primary sectors while reducing the fossil feedstock dependence.

This project will seek partners to jointly carry out primary technical and energy analyses and studies. Cooperation with regional clusters will be sought and opportunities will be identified to contribute to the development of new technologies and products enabling the circular bio-economy. In case of success of the activities, a project proposal would be prepared together with partners on the HORIZON-JU-CBE theme.

The project is aligned with the actions outlined in the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Lithuania’s progress measure No 12-001-01-02-01, “Strengthen Innovation Ecosystems in Science Centres” This measure provides the strategic framework for the Development Programme for the period 2021-2030. This project has been designed with the specific aim of facilitating the realisation of Strategic Objective 1 of the National Progress Plan, which is to “transition towards a sustainable economic development model based on scientific knowledge, advanced technologies, innovations and enhance the international competitiveness of the country”. Furthermore, it is aligned with the initiatives set out in the 18th Government Programme of the Republic of Lithuania, as follows: 1.5.3 The objective is to prepare and implement an action plan for accelerating Lithuania’s participation in the EU Research and Innovation Programme, ‘Horizon Europe’.

LEI activities in the Project

  • Developing the necessary competences and preparing the preparation of the proposal
This activity will test the feasibility of the idea itself and prepare the search for international partners and the preparation of the proposal by assessing the potential contribution to the scope of the work packages proposed for the HORIZON proposal.
  • Identification of international partners.
This activity will establish contacts with companies in other countries active in biomass reprocessing.
