The project aims to address the high incidence of neurological impairments, such as post-operative cognitive decline, in patients undergoingcardiac and neurosurgery. These impairments are often due to compromised Cerebrovascular Autoregulation (CA), a physiological factorcrucial for maintaining stable cerebral blood flow. Current monitoring methods, like Doppler ultrasonography, are complex and time-consuming, posing significant challenges in high-demand environments. The project proposes the use of Archimedes, a patented, passive, and non-invasive monitor that provides continuous monitoring of intracranial pulse wave morphology. Archimedes has shown promisingresults in clinical trials, demonstrating a high correlation with invasive method. The project’s novelty lies in its approach to comparingArchimedes with Transcranial Doppler (TCD) on healthy volunteers subjected to various methodologies that can alter the status ofcerebrovascular autoregulation. The potential of Archimedes to replace existing methods could lead to a paradigm shiftin monitoringintracranial pressure waves, offering higher sensitivity and precision. The economic burden of Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction (POCD)and Postoperative Delirium (POD) is significant, with patients often requiring longer hospital stays and incurring higher costs. The proposedtechnology can serve as cost-saving tools, reducing the economic burden associated with these postoperative complications. The projectaims to contribute to treatment methodologies and tools, offering a valuable approach for optimal care and treatment for individuals. Multi-modal monitoring, incorporating Archimedes for its high temporal resolution parameters derived from morphologies of intracranialwaves, could enhance patient outcomes. The project is expected to bridge the gap between scientific innovation and clinical application, opening up exciting new possibilities for patient-specific treatments.
